Mayor and Police Chief Praise Officer's Quick Action During Hockey Game Cardiac Arrest

A Hero on the Ice

Oradell’s police community gathered last week to recognize Officer Frank Stefano, who sprang into action during a hockey game that turned into a medical emergency.

The incident unfolded on April 22 at the Ice House in Hackensack, where Stefano, off‑duty and gearing up to play, witnessed a goalie collapse from cardiac arrest. Without hesitation he began CPR and applied an on‑site defibrillator, buying critical minutes until emergency responders arrived.

The stricken player was rushed to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he remains on the road to recovery, a fact that has been met with relief by his family and teammates.

Mayor James Koth praised Stefano’s quick thinking, emphasizing that his dedication to public safety extends beyond the badge. Police Chief David Gangemi echoed the sentiment, calling the officer’s response a testament to his rigorous training and unwavering professionalism.

Bergen County Commissioner Chairman Steven Tanelli presented a certificate of commendation, underscoring the broader community’s appreciation for Stefano’s heroic conduct.

The recognition highlights how ordinary moments can become extraordinary when courage and training intersect, reinforcing the vital role of first responders in everyday life.
