The first-ever West Side basketball tournament unfolded Saturday at Richmond Park in Grand Rapids, Michigan, bringing together ten teams in a three‑on‑three competition for a $1,000 prize.

Organizer Chris Cranson, who grew up watching basketball on the West Side, said the tournament was born out of a scarcity of recreational options and a desire to create a lasting community tradition.
Cranson hopes the shared love of the game will spark lasting friendships among participants.
Board member Dee Jones emphasized the organization’s goal of enriching people and building a sense of community, while board chair Maurice Baker noted that sports have a unique power to unite people regardless of background.
Participants Adam Yohannes and Yoel Abraham described the experience as a positive step that deepened their connection to the neighborhood and offered a fresh perspective on the area.
Community leaders say events like this strengthen ties in a part of the city that often receives little attention, reinforcing the belief that basketball can be a catalyst for broader social cohesion.
