A Stormy Start to the Race
The NASCAR Cup Series headed to EchoPark Speedway near Atlanta with high hopes of a competitive stage, but Mother Nature had other plans. Lightning detected within eight miles of the track triggered an immediate delay, halting the action at lap 108 of Stage 2.
Ryan Blaney, who had secured the pole position alongside his Team Penske teammate Joey Logano, was at the front when the caution came out. The race required 130 laps to be declared official, but the sudden weather shift left teams scrambling for strategy.
Severe thunderstorms rolled in just as the green flag dropped, bringing heavy rain that slicked the asphalt. Series officials confirmed that lightning within the eight‑mile safety radius forced a pause, and the rain intensified shortly thereafter, making the track treacherous.
Despite the interruption, several drivers had already made their mark. Bubba Wallace held second, Tyler Reddick was third, while Christopher Bell, a Toyota driver, sat fourth and Chase Elliott, the defending Atlanta winner, ran fifth. Points leader Denny Hamlin, who started 28th, had already climbed to 15th before the stoppage.
Tyler Reddick, who captured a victory at EchoPark earlier in the season, had qualified 31st but surged to fourth by lap 35, showcasing the unpredictable nature of the event. Austin Cindric, another Penske entry, moved up to third early, adding to the Penske dominance at the front.
The delay underscored the series' reliance on safety protocols, with officials waiting for the storm to pass before deciding on a restart. Fans were left watching the clouds roll in, aware that the race could resume only when conditions cleared sufficiently.
