On a recent Saturday, the Tiverton Titans of Devon set out to break the world record for the most basketball layups completed in a single 24‑hour period. The team surpassed expectations, logging 26,274 successful layups before the clock struck midnight.
A Community‑Driven Challenge
The marathon effort was more than a numbers game; it was designed to shine a light on grassroots sport and to encourage wider participation in basketball across the region.
Head coach George Sinclair, who has led the Titans for several years, said the achievement reflects the club’s commitment to using sport as a catalyst for confidence and community spirit among young people.
The record‑setting attempt was monitored by an independent panel that included Anna Harries, Rich Radford, Ben Harper and Hannah Radford, whose meticulous documentation will now be submitted to Guinness World Records for official verification.
Looking ahead, the Titans are preparing to launch a new youth programme in September, already supported by 60 children who have signed up, and they have also fielded a ladies team to broaden opportunities for female athletes.
Local officials and sports advocates say the feat could inspire similar initiatives elsewhere, reinforcing the role of community clubs in promoting health, inclusion and youth development.
