Former Southeastern University coach embraces new challenge at MNU, aiming for championship

A Familiar Face Returns

MidAmerica Nazarene University announced today that Hudson Welty will take the reins of the Pioneer men’s basketball program, bringing a blend of playing experience, coaching acumen, and a championship mindset to the role.

Welty, an alumnus of MNU, previously wore the Pioneer jersey from 2014 to 2018 under the guidance of Rocky Lamar, and later served as an assistant coach before stepping into a leadership position at Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida.

During his two seasons as head coach at Southeastern, Welty compiled a 39‑24 record, guided the Fire to the Sun Conference Tournament championship game and secured a berth in the NAIA Men’s Basketball National Tournament, showcasing his ability to develop talent and compete at a national level.

Leadership Praise and Institutional Vision

Ryan Thompson, Director of Athletics at MNU, praised Welty’s dedication, stating, “Hudson’s commitment to building a program that pursues excellence and develops young men of Christlike character aligns perfectly with our mission.” The university also took the opportunity to thank President Jon North, Vice President Todd Garrett, and Thompson for their confidence in the new coach.

Welty expressed gratitude to the university leadership, highlighting the institution’s tradition and the chance to mentor student‑athletes who share his values. “I am excited to return to a campus that shaped my basketball journey and to contribute to a legacy of championship aspirations,” he said.

Looking Ahead

The hiring marks a strategic move for MNU, which has enjoyed consecutive NAIA Tournament appearances in recent years. With a 45‑16 record under Welty’s previous stint as lead assistant, the program aims to sustain its upward trajectory and contend for future titles.
