New York International FC (NYIFC) will stage its fifth annual 5K on July 18, a run that blends sport with remembrance for Davide Giri, the Italian Ph.D. student who was killed in a senseless attack in December 2021.
A run that keeps a memory alive
The race will start at 9 a.m. at CrossFit Dynamix in Astoria, Queens, and will wind through the neighborhood before finishing with a celebration at Rivercrest on Ditmars Boulevard at 10 a.m. Participants can join in person or virtually, and the event welcomes runners of every age and ability level.
Organizers have set a suggested donation of $15, though any contribution is welcome. All proceeds will be directed to Amici di Davide, the nonprofit founded by Giri’s family and friends to support causes he cared about.
From the field to the community
Giri, a 30‑year‑old scholar at Columbia University, arrived in the United States as a graduate student and quickly became a beloved figure on and off the soccer pitch. His death shocked teammates, classmates and the broader soccer community, prompting the creation of the annual fundraiser.
Gary Philpott, co‑founder of NYIFC, says the event is more than a race; it is a way for the community to stay connected to Giri’s spirit. “We want to keep his memory alive and show that his impact endures,” he explained.
Nicholas Alexandrakos, another founding member of the club, echoed the sentiment, noting that the 5K unites players, families and supporters across the city.

Beyond the run, NYIFC will host a post‑race gathering at Rivercrest, offering participants a chance to celebrate together and reflect on the cause they support. The club also highlighted the role of Columbia University in the story, where Giri pursued his doctoral studies.
