Rookie of the Week
Dylan Melton, a redshirt freshman first baseman for the UMBC Retrievers, was selected America East Rookie of the Week after a dominant three‑game sweep of NJIT. His contributions at the plate and in the field helped the team overcome a 4‑0 deficit to win the final game 7‑4 and secure the No.2 seed in the conference tournament.
Melton batted leadoff in every contest of the series and finished the sweep 8‑13 with five runs batted in, four runs scored, two doubles and a walk. He also posted a perfect 17‑17 fielding record, recording 16 putouts without an error.
The decisive moment came in game three when Melton delivered a game‑winning RBI single that capped the Retrievers’ rally. The win not only highlighted his poise under pressure but also underscored his ability to impact the game in multiple ways.
Looking ahead, UMBC will travel to face the highest remaining seed, Binghamton, on Thursday at 3 p.m. The upcoming matchup promises a test of the team’s momentum as they aim to extend their season.
Coach and teammates alike have praised Melton’s work ethic and versatility, noting that his blend of offensive firepower and reliable defense exemplifies the kind of talent that can elevate a program. As the Retrievers prepare for the next round, Melton’s performance serves as a bright spot for the program’s future.
