Virginia’s basketball program is entering a pivotal season as head coach Ryan Odom replaces the long‑tenured Tony Bennett, ushering in a faster, more versatile style of play.
A New Coaching Philosophy
Odom’s résumé, marked by successful tenures at Lenoir‑Rhyne, UMBC, Utah State and VCU, suggests he brings a proven track record of turning programs into contenders.
The Cavaliers will rely on a core that returns intact, featuring standout guard Thijs De Ridder, who started every game last year and shot 50.8% from the field, forward Johann Grunloh, a defensive anchor with multiple block performances, and guard Sam Lewis, who emerged as a 45.5% shooter from the perimeter.
A Revamped Roster
Freshman big man Chance Mallory also saw extensive minutes as a rookie, dishing out 3.4 assists per game, while big‑man Silas Barksdale, who redshirted last season, is expected to add depth at forward or center.
Adding to the mix are four transfers — Jurian Dixon from UC Irvine, Christian Harmon from Arkansas State, Jan Vide from Loyola Marymount and Kalu Anya from Saint Louis — each bringing distinct skill sets that complement the returning nucleus.
The incoming freshmen — Favour Ibe, Nolan Adekunle and Quincy Watson — bring athleticism and shooting prowess; Adekunle, who honed his game in Germany’s top league, is described as a three‑and‑D wing, while Ibe’s Nigerian background and defensive instincts could provide a spark on the perimeter.
With a blend of experienced returnees, savvy transfers and promising newcomers, Odom believes the Cavaliers are positioned to contend, aiming to translate his dynamic philosophy into tangible success on the national stage.
