Jarrell Chandler, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound safety from Halls, Tennessee, announced his commitment to Clemson University on a live Rivals broadcast on May 18, sending a ripple through the college football recruiting landscape.
The pledge marks the culmination of a high-school career that saw Chandler line up as both a receiver and a defender, helping Halls reach the Class 5A state semifinals for the first time in school history.
Ranked as the No. 11 prospect in Tennessee and No. 24 safety nationally by the 247Sports Composite, Chandler brings a blend of size, speed, and playmaking ability that coaches say fits the Tigers’ evolving defensive scheme.
During his senior season, he caught 42 passes for 691 yards and seven touchdowns, while also tallying 94 total tackles, eight pass deflections, six tackles for loss, an interception and a fumble recovery on defense.
The Recruit’s Journey
Chandler’s versatility was on full display early in his junior year, when he transitioned from wide receiver to defensive back mid-season, a move that allowed him to showcase his tackling instincts and coverage skills.
His performance earned him four-star status and a spot on the All-State team, drawing attention from programs across the SEC before he narrowed his choices to Clemson, Ohio State and Alabama.
Implications for Clemson
Clemson’s defensive coordinator praised the addition, noting that Chandler’s size and physicality address a need for deeper safety rotation as the Tigers aim to reload after a strong defensive showing last season.
The commitment also reflects the influence of local media, with Knox News reporting that the player’s family cited the university’s academic reputation and proximity to home as decisive factors.
A Community’s Pride
In Halls, the news sparked celebrations among teammates, coaches and fans who have followed Chandler’s rise from a multi-position standout to a nationally recognized prospect.
Wynton Jackson, a fellow senior at Halls and longtime teammate, said the commitment “shows that hard work pays off and puts our town on the map.”
The next step for Chandler will be participating in Clemson’s summer camp and eventually joining the roster for the upcoming season, where he is expected to compete for immediate playing time.
