A Fresh Face in the Net
Ryder Fetterolf, a 19‑year‑old goaltender from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is set to join the Penn State Nittany Lions for the upcoming season, bringing a highly decorated junior‑level résumé to College Park.
Selected in the fourth round of the 2026 NHL Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes, Fetterolf arrives after a dominant 2025‑26 campaign in the Ontario Hockey League where he posted a .923 save percentage, a 2.07 goals‑against average, six shutouts and a 29‑9‑3 record, earning the league’s Goaltender of the Year honor.
Coach Josh Fleming and veteran Kevin Reidler shared the net last season, splitting starts and posting complementary numbers. The coaching staff plans to ease Fetterolf into the lineup, using him primarily in non‑conference matchups to give Fleming periodic rest while gauging his readiness.
If the freshman can translate his OHL success to the NCAA rink, he could challenge for more than a third of the team’s appearances and potentially earn a larger role in Big Ten conference play, though the depth chart remains competitive.
The Nittany Lions’ goaltending corps, anchored by Penn State University’s historic program and supported by the Carolina Hurricanes’ development pipeline, promises an intriguing storyline as the young netminder looks to make his mark.
