A Narrow Defeat
The Iowa high school baseball tournament’s semifinal pitted the North Polk Comets against Dubuque Wahlert Catholic, a clash that would hinge on early miscues and a late surge.
North Polk’s defense faltered in the first inning, allowing Wahlert to plate the opening run and take a 1‑0 lead.
A dropped third strike and a passed ball in the fifth extended the advantage to 2‑0, putting pressure on the Comets.
In the sixth, North Polk rallied, tying the game with a two‑RBI single from Chase Fjelland that sparked hope among the fans.
Relief pitcher Ty Lamfer steadied the ship, escaping a jam in the bottom of the sixth and leaving a Wahlert runner stranded at third.
The seventh inning saw Wahlert mount a comeback, capped by Noah Krapfl’s walk‑off single that secured a 3‑2 victory.
Despite the loss, the Comets finished the season among the top four in Class 3A, a testament to a remarkable campaign that featured contributions from Bryce Burke, Ryan Zoske, Jack Spieker, Hunter Hill and Easton Ingle.
