A Cultural Exchange on the Diamond
The International Christian University‑Keihin Baseball Club arrived in Freeport, Pennsylvania, ready to showcase Japanese talent at the Freeport International Baseball Invitational. Fourteen players, eleven from International Christian University and three from Keihin, were greeted by local host families who offered meals, laundry and shelter.
Masahito Takahata, who traveled from Puerto Rico to Pittsburgh before joining the squad, said he felt at home in Freeport and was grateful for the chance to play alongside his countrymen. Jiei Nomiya, a first‑baseman, noted that it was his first visit to the East Coast in many years and that the experience had been exhilarating.
The team’s player‑manager, Kosaku Matsuo, emphasized the vital role of the host families, while Tina Ferringer, Freeport’s borough manager, coordinated the logistics and even opened her own home to a few players. Despite occasional weather setbacks that interrupted games and local festivities, the group remained upbeat.
Some members took a break to watch a Dodgers‑Yankees showdown at Yankee Stadium in New York City, soaking in the atmosphere of American baseball culture. The blend of on‑field competition and off‑field camaraderie has left a lasting impression on the visitors.
The squad also features Chuck Sarver, Kengo Takeno and a group of teammates — Hayden Good, Henry Good, Rhett Good, Nate Good, Amanda Good, Ryohei Takagi, Nobu Yamazaki, Yume Shiozawa and Kota Kayanuma — who have each embraced the cultural exchange while honing their skills on American fields.
