Tanner Nichols, a senior at Madison Central High School, has been named the state's Gatorade Player of the Year in soccer, an honor that recognizes outstanding performance on the field, in the classroom, and through community service.
Nichols steered his team to consecutive 7A state championships, finishing the season with 20 goals and nine assists while closing his high school career with 33 goals and 16 assists.
Beyond his athletic feats, Nichols maintains an A average, participates in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and has volunteered as a youth soccer coach and counselor, contributing to multiple community service initiatives through his church.
A season defined by excellence
Jackson Academy head coach Phil Buffington lauded Nichols for his leadership and work ethic, noting that the player’s influence extends well beyond statistics.
Next fall, Nichols will continue his soccer career at Meridian Community College, where he hopes to build on the foundation he has established in Mississippi.
