At the 2026 SEC football media days, Florida Gators wide receiver Vernell Brown III took the podium to share his vision for the upcoming season. The rising sophomore, who burst onto the scene as a true freshman, spoke about his goals, the culture he’s embraced, and the personal growth he’s experienced since his debut.
Brown’s freshman campaign was nothing short of historic. He led the Gators in receptions and receiving yards, while also serving as the primary punt and kick returner for much of the year. His 40 catches for 512 yards and 261 return yards earned him All‑SEC honors and made him the first true freshman in program history to top the team in both categories.
A Family Legacy Meets New Ambitions
Rooted in a family tradition that stretches back through his father, uncle and grandfather, Brown said the legacy he carries is both a source of pride and motivation. “I want to honor where I come from and carve out my own path at the University of Florida,” he explained, emphasizing the responsibility he feels toward his lineage.
Within the locker room, Brown has found mentors in veterans Myles Graham and Jadan Baugh, while head coach Jon Sumrall’s leadership and offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner’s personable system have shaped his development. “The culture here is something I respect deeply,” he noted, adding that the coaching staff’s vision aligns with his own aspirations.
Brown also expressed excitement about the SEC’s reputation as the nation’s toughest conference. He said the challenge of facing elite competition fuels his drive, and he is eager to test himself against the best. A new jersey number, symbolic of the history he now carries, further underscores the weight of his responsibilities.
Beyond the field, the sophomore revealed a personal ritual that fuels his focus: singing along to Tom Petty during games. “It means everything to me,” he said, highlighting the blend of tradition and personal expression that defines his experience.
