A New Era for Portland State Football
Portland State’s football program kicked off its 2026 campaign on July 29, when the Vikings took the practice field at Stott Community Field under first‑year head coach Chris Fisk. The session marked the beginning of a schedule that includes a much‑anticipated home opener against nationally‑ranked UC Davis on Aug. 29.
Fisk, who spent seven successful years at Central Washington University, brings a 48‑22 record and three conference titles to the role. He will be joined at the Big Sky Conference Football Kickoff event on July 28‑29 by linebacker Jaxton Helmstetler and wide receiver Terence Loville, who will represent the Vikings in the showcase.
The roster features 108 athletes, of whom 65 are newcomers and 29 are returning letterwinners. Among the returning starters are running back Delon Thompson, tight end Tanner Beaman, and wide receivers Cru Newman and Jaylen Lynch, while the offensive line retains veterans Pule Leatigaga, James Minot and Semisi Latu. At quarterback, John‑Keawe Sagapolutele, Tyrese Smith and Gabe Downing each bring starting experience.
Key Players to Watch
Among the standouts, Delon Thompson will anchor the backfield, while Tanner Beaman’s pass‑catching ability and the speed of Terence Loville and Jaylen Lynch add depth to the offense. On defense, Helmstetler’s leadership will be crucial, supported by the experience of linebackers and the secondary.
The team will hold intra‑squad scrimmages on Aug. 8 at Hillsboro Stadium and Aug. 15 at Stott Community Field as they fine‑tune schemes before the season opener. The Big Sky Football Kickoff Show will broadcast on ESPN+ on Monday at 11:49 a.m., giving fans an early glimpse of the Vikings’ preparations.
