Expanded Playoff Format
The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) and its partner MaxPreps released the 2026 high school football schedule this week, confirming that the season will kick off on August 20‑22. This early start reflects a league‑wide decision to broaden the playoff picture, a move that was ratified by member schools in December.
Under the new structure, each of the eight classification divisions will see its playoff-qualifying slots rise from 32 to 48 teams. That expansion lifts the total number of postseason participants from 256 to 384, reshaping the competitive landscape and giving more programs a chance at a state title.
Season Timeline and Playoff Roadmap
The regular season will span nine weeks, after which the qualifying teams will be locked in. A live telecast at 9 p.m. on Saturday, October 17, will reveal the full slate of playoff participants, marking a key moment for coaches, players and fans eager to see which squads advance.
Playoff competition will follow a series of named rounds: Opening Round on October 23‑24, First Round on October 30‑31, Second Round on November 6‑7, Quarterfinals on November 13‑14, and Semifinals on November 20‑21. Each stage will narrow the field further as teams battle for a spot in the championship.
The culmination of the tournament arrives with the IHSA Football State Finals scheduled for November 27‑28 at Hancock Stadium, located on the campus of Illinois State University in Normal. Eight title games will be played at that venue, providing a centralized stage for the state's top programs to contest their championships.
