Mark Smith, the 2017 Illinois Mr. Basketball, is once again preparing for life on the hardwood in Japan after inking a one‑year contract with the Akita Northern Happinets of the B. League Premier. The 6‑foot‑5 point guard arrives with a résumé that includes stints in Germany’s Basketball Bundesliga and a productive season in Japan, where he averaged 18.6 points and finished fourth in league scoring.
A Strategic Move for Akita
The Happinets finished last in the league in scoring last season, prompting management to seek a dynamic guard who can create shots and elevate the offense. Smith’s arrival is seen as a direct response to that need, with club officials emphasizing the intention to rebuild around a player who can both score and facilitate.
Smith’s professional journey began after a standout senior season at Edwardsville High School, where he led the team to a 30‑2 record, set multiple scoring records and earned Gatorade Illinois Boys Basketball Player of the Year honors. He capped his prep career with a 45‑point performance in a postseason game, the most ever by an Edwardsville player in a playoff contest, and finished with 1,477 points, ranking third in program history.
In Germany, he averaged 12.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and three steals per game for Ratiopharm Ulm, showcasing his defensive versatility. His prior experience in Japan, where he finished fourth in scoring, demonstrates his ability to adapt to different styles of play and suggests he will be a major driving force for Akita’s attack.
Analysts predict that Smith’s playmaking ability and scoring touch could instantly improve the Happinets’ offensive output. “We’re excited to add a player of his caliber,” a club official said, noting that the signing aligns with the team’s strategy to move away from the bottom of the league table and compete more aggressively in the upcoming season.
