Josh Burkett, a former standout athlete at Wes‑Del High School, has been appointed to lead the school's athletic program in a combined capacity.
Burkett graduated in 2007 after excelling in football, basketball and baseball, experiences that forged his lifelong connection to the school and its community.
Returning to Wes‑Del
After coaching stints at Lewis Cass and Western Boone and serving as athletic director at Monroe Central, Burkett rejoined Wes‑Del in 2023 as the boys basketball coach.
He will transition to the role of athletic director at the start of the 2026‑27 school year, while continuing to coach the basketball team.
A Dual Role in Modern Coaching
The move reflects a growing trend across Indiana, where coaches are increasingly taking on administrative duties to shape both strategy and operations.
Burkett says his hands‑on experience as a coach gives him insight into the day‑to‑day challenges of athletes, while his administrative background equips him to streamline resources and expand opportunities.
Looking Ahead
He plans to leverage lessons from previous programs to modernize training, improve facilities and foster a culture of accountability across the school's sports teams.
Community members and parents alike have expressed optimism that Burkett's dual perspective will bring fresh energy to Wes‑Del athletics and reinforce the school's tradition of competitive spirit.
