NASCAR announced that, beginning with the 2026 season, Cup Series practice will be condensed into a single 50‑minute window at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
What the new format looks like
The revised format will remain in effect for the remainder of the 2026 schedule, except at superspeed tracks and on weekends designated for extended practice, where the traditional split‑group approach will continue.
All entered cars will share the same on‑track time, replacing the previous division of teams into separate groups that often resulted in limited track time for many competitors.
No break, same impound rules
The session will forgo a mandated break, and impound procedures will stay unchanged, ensuring that the cars remain sealed until the session ends.
Extra tires to meet the longer window
To accommodate the longer continuous window, NASCAR will add an extra set of practice tires to each weekend’s allotment, giving teams more flexibility to test setups.
Team response
Team representatives discussed the proposal during a technical meeting last week, and officials said a substantial majority of teams voiced support for the change.
Season‑long implications
By giving every team a full 50‑minute slot, drivers and crew chiefs can better evaluate handling, tire wear and potential race‑day adjustments, which should lead to more competitive on‑track product.
The rule‑book update will take effect immediately for the New Hampshire weekend and will carry forward through the remaining eligible events on the schedule.
