Under the new system, a regulation win will be rewarded with two points, while teams that fall in overtime or a shootout will still earn a single point. A loss in regulation, however, will bring no points.
The league tested the format against the previous season’s results and discovered that the revised standings would have been tighter, compressing the gap between teams without altering the ultimate ranking.
