Hamilton is set to mark a milestone in its sporting heritage with an inaugural community day dedicated to baseball legend Joe Nuxhall, whose name now graces the fields at L.J. Smith Park.
The festivities will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 25, offering families a chance to participate in non‑competitive baseball games, enjoy free refreshments and listen to music spun by DJ Aries Jones.
Historic Red Stockings Game
A centerpiece of the event will be a Historic Red Stockings Game, pitting the Reds Hall of Fame 1869 Redstockings against local players. The match will be played according to the original 1869 rules, honoring the year the team became the world’s first professional baseball club.
Beyond the action on the diamond, the day will feature a lively soundtrack from DJ Aries Jones, free hot dogs, chips and water, creating a festive atmosphere that welcomes participants of all ages.

Joe Nuxhall’s legacy stretches back to 1944, when at just 15 years old he became the youngest player ever to appear in a Major League Baseball game, a record that still stands. After his playing career, he emerged as a beloved voice of the Cincinnati Reds, chronicling the sport for generations of fans.

North End Citizens for Community Action has championed the cause for years, leading the renaming of the fields in 2012 and securing an Ohio Historical Marker in 2020 that now stands at Field #1, commemorating the spot where Nuxhall was first scouted by the Reds in 1943.
A fund administered through the Hamilton Community Foundation supports the ongoing upkeep of the site, ensuring that the tribute remains vibrant for years to come.

The celebration will extend to a “Hamilton Night at Great American Ball Park” on Tuesday, July 28, where proceeds from ticket sales will help fund future Nuxhall Day events and maintain the historical marker, reinforcing a lasting connection between the community and the sport that shaped one of its own.
