Elon University announced this week that Steve Robinson, a coach with more than 40 years of Division I experience, has been appointed Special Assistant to the Head Coach of the men’s basketball program.
A career built on championships
Robinson’s résumé reads like a who’s who of college basketball powerhouses. Over three decades he captured three national titles, guided his teams to 31 NCAA Tournament appearances and reached eight Final Fours. His stints at Arizona, North Carolina, Kansas, Florida State and Tulsa each produced conference championships and NBA talent.
At North Carolina he spent 18 seasons under Hall of Fame coach Roy Williams, helping the Tar Heels secure three NCAA crowns while recruiting players such as Paul Pierce, Danny Green, Harrison Barnes, Ty Lawson and Raymond Felton. His player development pipeline also produced stars like Caleb Love.
Robinson’s recruiting acumen extended beyond Chapel Hill. He contributed to Arizona’s recent run of four conference titles, including two Pac‑12 championships, and helped Florida State and Tulsa each earn NCAA Tournament berths. In 2019 he was inducted into the A STEP UP Assistant Coach Hall of Fame.
Bringing championship culture to Elon
Now at Elon, Robinson will focus on special projects, player development and strategic recruiting. Athletic Director Kathryn praised his “proven ability to elevate programs” and said his presence signals a new era of ambition for the Phoenix.
The university also highlighted his family life, noting that he and his wife Lisa are parents to four children and grandparents to two. With his deep roots in the sport and a network that spans the nation, Robinson is expected to help Elon compete at a higher level in the coming seasons.
