A Strategic Recruit for the Hoosiers
Indiana Field Hockey announced this week that Berta Saenz de Santa Maria has signed to join the program’s 2026 class, marking the ninth addition to the incoming cohort. The Spanish midfielder will bring a blend of technical skill and competitive experience to the team.
A native of Santander, Spain, Saenz de Santa Maria developed her game at Real Sociedad Tenis Magdalena after completing her secondary education at Esclavas del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús. During her club career she captured two U16 outdoor championships and earned third‑place finishes in both the U18 indoor and outdoor tournaments, while also contributing to a U18 cup victory.
Coach Kayla Bashore praised the recruit’s drive, stating that Saenz de Santa Maria chose Indiana University for its world‑class athletic facilities and rigorous academic reputation. The midfielder will major in Nutrition Science, a field she hopes to apply beyond her playing years.
The new student‑athlete is one of three siblings in her family, including sisters Teresa and brother Ángel, who have supported her transition from Spain to Bloomington. Their encouragement reflects the close‑knit background that shapes her approach to both sport and study.
Saenz de Santa Maria joins a promising group of teammates such as Elle Obenour, Helen Grahe, Jessie Mauro, Elise Eves, Gabriela Garayo Aranceta, Karly Redman, Agustina Gamonal, Isa Smulders, Tomas González, Noelia, and others. Together they aim to strengthen the Hoosiers’ lineup as they prepare for the upcoming season.
