A tribute to the city’s basketball legacy
The Syracuse Public Arts Commission is poised to give final approval to a new public artwork that will celebrate the city’s rich basketball heritage. The piece, nicknamed the "G.O.A.T." mural, will cover the exterior of the Glazed & Confused café on West Genesee Street, turning the building into a permanent visual ode to the sport that has put Syracuse on the national stage.
Philadelphia‑based artist Chris B. Murray, a native son of Syracuse who now works out of Philadelphia, will design the mural. His concept features a stylized goat formed from the silhouettes of iconic Syracuse figures, including the late coach Jim Boeheim and former NBA star Carmelo Anthony. The design weaves these legends together in a single, dynamic composition.
Murray, who grew up in the city, emphasizes that the project is as much about community engagement as it is about artistic expression. He plans to involve local high school students in the painting process, giving them hands‑on experience and a stake in the city’s cultural landscape. "This mural will be a living classroom," he said, "where the next generation can leave their mark alongside the legends they admire."
If the commission grants approval on July 28, Murray hopes to begin spraying the wall as early as September 1. The artwork will stretch across the side of Glazed & Confused at 208‑211 W. Genesee St., creating a vibrant backdrop that reflects the city’s passion for basketball and its broader cultural identity.
