Golden anniversary brings NMU hockey alumni together
The 50th reunion of NMU Hockey is set to unfold over a weekend in Marquette, Michigan, blending nostalgia with a chance for former teammates to reconnect.
A welcome reception at Blackrocks Brewery on July 30 will kick off the festivities, followed by a golf outing on August 1 that will close the celebration.
Committee members Doug Garrow, Ryan Riipi and Dave Shyiak have been spearheading fundraising efforts to offset travel costs, especially for alumni who may be traveling from as far as British Columbia.
The $240 per team fee for the golf outing reflects the careful budgeting needed to bring together a diverse group of former players, many of whom have not set foot in Marquette for two decades.
Organizers say the event is as much about sharing stories and laughter as it is about honoring the program’s legacy, with former participants eager to relive memories from the 1976 inception of the sport at Northern Michigan University.
Local roots and far‑flung connections
Garrow and Riipi, both native to the area, grew up watching the early days of the program and now help guide the reunion’s planning, while alumni from across Canada illustrate the far‑reaching impact of the hockey community.
The gathering underscores how a shared passion can bridge generations, turning a half‑century milestone into a living archive of experiences and friendships.
