A Month of Triumph
The Pierre Governor Soccer program is preparing to mark July 2026 with a series of national championship celebrations, a milestone that reflects the program's rapid ascent.
At the forefront is the South Dakota United Spirit, the U16 Premier side captained by Emlyn Swanson, which has secured a place in the championship game of the US Club Soccer National Cup. The roster also features Myah Fravel, Aubrey Fischer, Cameron Larson, Josephine Wurtz and Brittney Sargent, each contributing distinct strengths to the squad.
The final is set for Friday morning in Denver, Colorado, where the Spirit will meet the Desert Communities Soccer Club from Victorville, California. Their pool stage included a 2-2 draw with a team from Arlington, Virginia, a 4-1 victory over a side from Athens, Georgia, and a narrow 3-2 win against a central Iowa opponent. Swanson made several key saves, including a penalty-kick stop, while Fravel converted a spot-kick and Fischer added a goal. Larson commanded the midfield, and the defensive partnership of Wurtz and Sargent proved rock solid.
The path to the final began with a dominant performance at the Midwest Regional Cup in Chicago, where the Spirit went 5-0, defeating teams from Indiana, Illinois and Minnesota. Earlier in the month, Jasmine Jost and rising junior Lexie Hillmer had already captured national titles, further underscoring the program's growing depth.
Beyond the trophies, the tournament highlights a blend of emerging talent and seasoned organization, with Swanson's heroics, Fravel's clutch scoring and the backline's resilience painting a picture of a balanced side ready to contend for the championship.
