State Champions on the Road to Michigan
The Horizon Elite baseball team is made up of twelve 13‑ and 14‑year‑olds from El Paso who have captured the Texas West state championship after victories in the District 37 tournament in Pecos, a sectional tournament in Lubbock and the state tournament in Abilene.
Their next challenge is the Junior League Baseball Southwest Regional Tournament, where a win would earn them a spot in the Junior League World Series in Michigan later this summer.
A League Built for Opportunity
The team’s rise is tied to the El Paso Youth Border League, a new initiative that fields 42 teams across six divisions to give children in lower‑income neighborhoods a chance to play organized baseball.
Manager Brian Villagrana, who has guided the squad through each playoff round, says the league’s growth reflects both untapped talent and the community’s hunger for athletic opportunity.
Villagrana notes that local athletes often lack exposure, but the Border League’s structure has begun to change that narrative, allowing players to showcase their skills on larger stages.
Parents, volunteers and local businesses have rallied behind the team, providing equipment, travel funds and moral support that have turned a modest program into a state‑champion contender.
If the Horizon Elite can navigate the regional tournament, they will join a lineage of El Paso teams that have reached the World Series, a feat that would spotlight the city’s emerging baseball talent.
