Oneal Delancy, a four-star combo guard in the class of 2027, announced his commitment to the Houston Cougars on Wednesday, choosing the university over a slate of SEC programs that included Florida, Florida State, South Florida and Miami.
The decision marks a significant addition to Houston’s recruiting class, as Delancy is ranked No. 40 overall in the SC Next 100 and No. 44 in the Rivals Industry Ranking, underscoring the Cougars’ rise under head coach Kelvin Sampson.
Delancy cited the program’s culture, its recent winning tradition and the promise of player development as the primary factors behind his choice, saying the environment at Houston felt like the right fit for his growth.
A standout on the Nike EYBL circuit, he averaged 16.5 points, 3.6 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal per game, and helped the Florida Rebels capture a Peach Jam championship. In his junior season at Montverde Academy, he posted 13.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game, showcasing a blend of scoring and defensive intensity.
A Recruit with a Clear Vision
Standing 6-foot-2 and weighing 165 pounds, Delancy hails from Montverde, Florida, where he has already drawn interest from 24 different schools. His commitment represents the sixth top-50 recruit that Sampson has secured in the past three recruiting cycles, a testament to the program’s growing influence.
Joe Tipton, a senior analyst covering college basketball, noted that Delancy’s skill set could immediately impact Houston’s backcourt, providing depth and defensive versatility as the Cougars aim to maintain their momentum in the competitive American Athletic Conference.
