A modest crowd gathered Wednesday in the lobby of Santa Fe College's gymnasium, where Johnny Wiggs stood beside his family as colleagues and former players paid tribute to his two‑decade tenure as the program's head baseball coach.
A career built on more than wins
Over 20 seasons, Wiggs amassed 627 victories, guiding the Saints to two NJCAA World Series appearances and earning a place in the NJCAA Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2025.
His coaching journey began at Polk Community College, where he spent eight seasons before moving to Santa Fe in 2006, succeeding Harry Tholen, who had compiled 526 wins across two separate stints.
Prior to that, Wiggs honed his craft as an assistant at Jacksonville University and the University of Florida, and earlier still he played at Valencia Community College and the University of Florida before embarking on a five‑year minor‑league stint with the Seattle Mariners, Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox systems.
Beyond the numbers, his impact is evident in the 185 players who signed with four‑year institutions and the seven who turned professional, including current MLB pitchers Ryan Yarbrough and Brad Lord.
The ceremony also highlighted personal milestones, such as the meeting of his wife at the University of Florida and the presence of his family on stage, underscoring the human side of a coach who has long been a fixture in Florida's baseball community.
Looking ahead
Though stepping away from the dugout, Wiggs leaves a roadmap for future coaches, a legacy of mentorship that will continue to shape the next generation of talent across the state.
