The event, now in its third year, invites families, athletes and fans to celebrate inclusion across the ice and the gridiron.
Football Meets Hockey
Former NFL running back Marshawn Lynch, a 2014 Super Bowl champion, will take centre stage by participating in a celebrity ball‑hockey game and running a football clinic for young participants. His involvement underscores the alliance’s effort to broaden its outreach beyond the rink.
The Hockey Diversity Alliance was founded in 2020 by current and former NHL players of colour with the explicit goal of combating racism and expanding access to hockey for minority and underserved youth. The organization operates on an annual budget of roughly $1.1 million, a figure that has enabled it to grow from a Toronto‑based initiative to a multi‑city program spanning Los Angeles, New York and Montreal.
SummerFest’s program includes live performances, carnival‑style attractions and a fundraising gala that draws a Who’s Who of Canadian sport. Olympic sprinter Andre De Grasse and tennis star Bianca Andreescu are slated to attend, adding star power to the community‑focused celebration.
Akim Aliu, the alliance’s chairman and a former professional hockey player, has spoken repeatedly about the tangible difference the group has made. He notes that the organization has positively influenced more than 2,000 lives, a testament to its grassroots work in vulnerable communities.
Beyond the on‑field activities, the event serves as a platform for dialogue about diversity in sport and for forging partnerships with schools, clubs and cultural institutions. By weaving football into its summer agenda, the Hockey Diversity Alliance hopes to attract new participants who might otherwise never set foot on an ice surface.
