East Carolina University announced that its football program will sport a distinctive helmet decal during the 2026 season, a tribute to former Pirate star Chris Johnson, who is publicly battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
A Season of Solidarity
Johnson, a Hall of Famer at ECU and a former National Football League standout, revealed his ALS diagnosis earlier this year and has since leveraged his platform to shine a light on the disease, partnering with health organizations to educate fans about early detection and research funding.
Athletic director Jon Gilbert praised Johnson’s courage, stating that the decal represents more than a visual emblem — it is a commitment to carry Johnson’s fight onto every snap, reminding players and supporters alike of the resilience required both on and off the field.
Head coach Blake Harrell added that the team will wear Johnson’s name and his story in mind each time they take the field, turning the decal into a rallying point for both players and supporters and reinforcing a culture of unity and purpose.
During his collegiate career, Johnson amassed 3,245 rushing yards, ranking third in school history, and set a single‑season record for all‑purpose yards. He was the 24th overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans and remains one of only two Pirates ever selected in the first round.
