A Strategic Addition
Tennessee’s men’s basketball program received a boost this week when head coach Rick Barnes announced the addition of VCU forward Christian Fermin to the roster. Barnes highlighted the player’s leadership, experience and the intangible qualities he brings to the team.
College Experience
Fermin arrives after three seasons at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he contributed to two Atlantic 10 championship game appearances and two NCAA Tournament trips. His collegiate journey has been marked by steady growth and a reputation for poise under pressure.
During the 2024‑25 campaign Fermin posted averages of 4.6 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game while shooting an efficient 54.4 % from the floor. Those numbers reflect a player who can protect the rim and finish around the basket with confidence.
Barnes emphasized that Fermin’s defensive versatility will allow the Vols to switch schemes on the fly, while his offensive skill set adds depth to the frontcourt. The coach believes the newcomer will adapt quickly to Tennessee’s style of play and help sustain the program’s culture of competitiveness.
With Fermin’s signing, the Vols have now filled 14 of the 15 scholarship spots on their roster, positioning them well for the upcoming season. The move underscores the program’s strategic approach to building a balanced, experienced squad.
