The Fairfax County School Board has bestowed a lasting honor on a beloved figure in local youth baseball by renaming the athletic facility at Westfield High School as the “Rob Hahne Memorial Baseball Field.”
Rob Hahne, who passed away on May 14 at the age of 57, spent ten years at the helm of the school’s baseball program, shaping not only players’ skills but also their character.
A coach who built more than teams
Beyond the school grounds, Hahne served as executive director of the Northern Virginia Baseball Travel League, a league that now encompasses more than 400 teams across the region. He also helped launch the Potomac League, a summer circuit created during the pandemic to give college‑age players a chance to stay competitive.
His commitment to the sport extended to leadership roles on the Fairfax County Baseball Council and several other sports‑related boards, where he was a frequent voice on youth‑development matters.
In 2010, after his son Kyle was diagnosed with leukemia, Hahne founded Kyle’s Kamp. The charity has since raised more than $2.4 million for children’s hospitals, including Children’s National Medical Center and Inova Children’s Hospital.
Meredith Norris, principal of Westfield High, praised the tribute, saying it captures the essence of a man who taught his players to be good athletes and even better people. The renaming was officially approved at a school board meeting on July 17.
Hahne’s early years as a standout pitcher and hitter at Langley High School and his subsequent play at Elon University foreshadowed a career defined by mentorship and community service.
Colleagues and friends remember him as a coach who blended technical instruction with life lessons, a philosophy that resonated through the many programs he helped shape.
The field that now bears his name stands as a reminder of his contributions, inviting future generations to play, learn, and embody the values he championed.
