A Recruiting Coup
Houston Cougars basketball has secured a commitment from four-star combo guard Oneal Delancy for the 2027 recruiting class, a move that underscores the program’s rising appeal among elite prospects.
Delancy, ranked No. 40 overall in the SC Next 100, chose Houston over a suite of high-profile offers that included Florida, Florida State, South Florida and Miami. He highlighted the Cougars’ culture, winning tradition and the promise of individualized player development as decisive factors.
The 6-foot-2, 165-pound guard honed his game at Montverde Academy, where he averaged 16.5 points, 3.6 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal per game during the Nike EYBL circuit and helped the Florida Rebels capture a Peach Jam championship. In his junior season he posted 13.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.4 assists.
His first official visit to the University of Houston took place on June 5, a trip that sealed a recruitment that had been pursued by the staff for more than a year. Coach Kelvin Sampson, now in his second decade at the helm, marked the pledge as his sixth top-50 recruit in the past three classes, reinforcing the program’s reputation for turning high-rated prospects into contributors.
Local analyst Joe Tipton noted that the commitment not only bolsters the roster but also signals a continued ability to attract talent that can compete at the national level.
