Tom Moore, a cornerstone of University of Connecticut men’s basketball for more than two decades, announced his retirement this week, bringing to a close a 21‑year tenure that blended coaching, recruiting and administrative duties.
During his time on Jim Calhoun’s staff he helped the Huskies capture four NCAA championships, a period that cemented his reputation as one of the program’s most influential assistants.
More recently, Moore served as the team’s general manager, navigating the complexities of name, image and likeness deals and the transfer portal while working closely with head coach Dan Hurley.
The Decision Behind the Exit
In a statement, Moore said the increasing demands of modern college athletics made the decision to step away inevitable, noting the need to preserve his personal well‑being and family life.
UConn officials indicated they will begin a search for a successor who can blend NBA experience with a global outlook, hoping to leverage the position to strengthen the program’s international brand.
Moore’s basketball journey began in earnest at Quinnipiac, where he first served as an assistant before taking the head‑coach role and guiding the program for ten seasons.
He later joined the staff at the University of Rhode Island, where he worked under Dan Hurley before following the coach to UConn, contributing to the back‑to‑back national titles in 2023 and 2024.
Colleagues and former players alike praised Moore’s dedication, with athletic director David Benedict highlighting his role in modernizing the program’s roster management.
