A Global Tournament in Indiana
From July 23 to 26, the NFL FLAG Championships will transform Westfield’s Droplight Grand Park Sports Campus into a bustling arena for more than 350 youth teams representing dozens of countries. The event, billed as the world’s largest flag football tournament, draws participants from every corner of the globe, underscoring the sport’s explosive growth.
Representing the Steel City, three Pittsburgh-area squads — the Pittsburgh Flag Football League STEEL, the Boyce Park club, and the PFFL Ladies of Steel — will take the field. Their participation is backed by the Pittsburgh Steelers, whose vice president of business development and strategy, Dan Rooney, has publicly endorsed the competitors.
Broadcast partners including ESPN, ABC, NFL Network and the ESPN app will carry the games, giving the tournaments a national stage and introducing new audiences to a format that blends the excitement of football with the safety of flag play.
Flag football’s surge is not limited to youth leagues; the NFL is poised to launch a professional circuit in partnership with TMRW Sports, aiming to debut before the sport’s Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. The NCAA is also moving toward sponsoring women’s flag football as a championship sport, reflecting the discipline’s widening appeal.
Beyond the tournament, the Steelers have long championed flag football in western Pennsylvania, funding leagues, supplying equipment, and supporting collegiate women’s programs. Former Steelers safety Mike Logan contributes as an assistant coach for the PFFL Steel team, adding a layer of mentorship for the next generation.
