Starting with the 2027‑28 season, both Division I men’s teams and National Collegiate women’s programs will be required to equip their players with cut‑resistant protective gear, a move aimed at reducing injuries from skate blades.
During the 2026‑27 academic year, athletes are being encouraged to adopt additional protective items such as neck guards, wrist guards and ankle shields, giving them a transition period before the full mandate takes effect.
Expanded use of technology on the bench
A new rule permits teams to employ devices that transmit audio communications and monitor health and safety metrics from the bench, while explicitly prohibiting the use of video for coaching purposes during play.
Overtime and shootout adjustments
The regular‑season overtime format remains a 3‑on‑3 five‑minute stint for both men’s and women’s games. In women’s competition, conference policies will determine whether a shootout is employed if the game stays tied after overtime, and the same decision will be made by the home‑team conference in non‑conference matchups or at neutral sites.
Trapezoid zone and faceoff clarifications
Division I men’s games will feature a trapezoid area marked below the end line beginning in 2026‑27, allowing goalies to play the puck within that zone but not outside it toward the corners. Division III will adopt the same trapezoid for the 2027‑28 season. Additionally, faceoff participants must keep their stick blades flat on the ice before the puck is dropped.
A further rule tweak bars teams from calling a timeout if they cannot replace players after an icing call, ensuring that strategic pauses are reserved for genuine stoppages.
Finally, in women’s championship events that use video replay, every goal must be cleared before play resumes, a procedural safeguard that aligns with existing replay standards.
