The annual North Carolina Coaches Association East-West All-Star boys soccer showcase pitted the best high school talent from across the state against one another in a tightly contested contest. Representing the Hickory Metro, coach Thomas Clark steered the West squad, which ultimately secured a 3-1 victory over the East.

The game opened with a swift strike in the 10th minute when Fernando Hernandez opened the scoring, giving the West an early edge. The East answered back just before halftime, leveling the contest with an equalizer from Adler Sauer in the 44th minute.
The turning point arrived early in the second half when Josue Macias, the Newton-Conover graduate, found the net in the 51st minute to restore the West’s lead. His effort, coupled with a later strike from Hernandez in the 73rd minute, sealed a comfortable margin for the West.
Defensive stability was a hallmark of the West’s performance. Joel Briones, a recent West Caldwell graduate, logged 53 minutes at center back, helping to limit the East to a single goal while also contributing to the team’s overall composure.
Goalkeeping duties were shared by Tanner Jackson and Solomon Triplett, each registering three saves apiece. Their combined efforts kept the East’s shot volume at bay despite the West being outshot 10-9 overall.
Player Spotlight
Macias finished his high school career with 15 goals and 15 assists, earning All-Conference and All-Region honors, while Briones tallied 32 goals and 21 assists during his senior season and plans to study accounting at Appalachian State University.
Both players expressed enthusiasm about continuing their education and soccer careers at the collegiate level, underscoring the pathway that the All-Star experience provides for aspiring athletes.
Coach Clark reflected on the week’s events, noting that the victory marked a successful conclusion to his involvement in the East-West Games and highlighted the effectiveness of his game plan.
