A sport at a crossroads
The Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) is weighing the possibility of ending its sponsorship of field hockey after the 2026 season. Participation has stalled, with only 18 schools taking part in 2025, a figure far below the threshold required for continued sponsorship.
Field hockey has deep roots in Louisville, where it has been a staple since the 1970s and has produced state champions such as Sacred Heart, which captured the 2023 title by defeating Christian Academy 3-1. The KHSAA began sponsoring the state championship in 2014, and the 2026 season is slated to open on August 17, culminating in a tournament from October 24 to 28.
Local athletic directors are already preparing contingency plans. Troy Johnson, director of the Fern Creek athletic program, said the region will keep the sport alive even if the KHSAA withdraws its support. Donna Moir of Sacred Heart added that the sport enjoys strong popularity in the area and that many participants go on to play at the collegiate level.
The association is also expanding its portfolio, adding emerging activities such as pickleball and girls flag football while recently rejecting stunt cheerleading. This shift reflects a broader effort to diversify offerings amid fluctuating interest in traditional sports.
If the sponsorship is discontinued, the onus will fall on community programs and schools to sustain the sport, a challenge that local leaders appear ready to meet.
