A Quiet Morning Turns to Ash
Firefighters responded just after 8 a.m. Thursday to a report of smoke at the home of Tim Lester, a coordinator for the University of Iowa football program, located in Iowa City. The blaze quickly escalated, leading to the collapse of the second floor and ceiling, which left the interior heavily damaged.
No occupants were present at the time of the incident, but the homeowner's pet iguana was found alive and safely removed from the premises by the responding crew. During the operation, one firefighter sustained minor injuries, though officials confirmed the injuries were not life‑threatening.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with authorities yet to determine any ignition source. While some personal belongings were salvaged, the extent of the damage inside the residence is described as significant, and the structural integrity of the building has been compromised.
University officials have expressed condolences to Lester and his family, emphasizing that the incident will not affect the upcoming football season. The university's athletic department is expected to provide further updates as the investigation progresses.
