The lawsuit, originally filed in August 2025 and later narrowed to target only Hilt, stems from an alleged altercation that occurred moments before a scheduled game, when Hilt is said to have struck the player, resulting in the athlete’s removal from the roster and the subsequent loss of a scholarship.
While the judge rejected Hilt’s request for sanctions and ordered the quashing of a subpoena aimed at obtaining the plaintiff’s smartphone records, the decision underscores the limited scope of discovery in cases involving personal privacy. Jake Sabol, counsel for the plaintiff, argued that the incident constituted a clear violation of bodily integrity, while Amy Folan, a university spokesperson, declined to comment.
Hilt’s resignation from Central Michigan University earlier in 2025 adds a layer of ambiguity, as the institution has yet to address the legal fallout or the alleged incident publicly.
