Tyson Gilbert has been elevated to the role of assistant coach for the Colorado men's basketball program, a move announced recently that places a familiar face back onto the sidelines of the Buffs' storied arena.
The promotion follows a distinguished playing career that took Gilbert from the high schools of Aurora and Highlands Ranch to the collegiate ranks of CSU Pueblo and the University of Alaska Anchorage, where he helped the Seawolves secure a spot in the 2024 NCAA Division II Tournament.
Gilbert's basketball journey has always been rooted in Colorado; growing up in the Centennial State, he watched the Buffs with a keen eye and later pursued a coaching path that now circles back to his home state, a fact he describes as both surreal and deeply rewarding.
A Homegrown Vision
Under head coach Tad Boyle, Gilbert joins a staff that already features former Buffs players Evan Battey and Nate Tomlinson, as well as veteran recruiter Mike Rohn, creating a blend of alumni insight and fresh perspective.
Boyle, known for championing young, ambitious coaches, has given Gilbert an early opportunity to shape the team's development, a gesture that aligns with the program's tradition of nurturing home‑grown talent.
Gilbert, who holds a degree from CSU Pueblo and remains connected to his mother, a CU alumna, expressed gratitude for the chance to represent Colorado on the coaching front, stating that the role fulfills a lifelong ambition to give back to the community that raised him.
