Davenport Assumption, the No. 7 seed in the Iowa high school state baseball tournament, rolled past Carlisle 11-1 in just six innings on Tuesday, improving to a 27-13 record while handing the 26-9 Carlisle squad its first loss of the postseason.
Early Offensive Onslaught
The game opened with a burst of four runs in the first two innings, as Assumption plated two runs in the first and two more in the second before erupting for six in the fourth, pulling away decisively.
Right-hander Cooper Sweeney anchored the effort, delivering 5 2/3 innings that yielded only four hits and a single earned run, showcasing poise under pressure.
Carlisle’s Fightback
Carlisle managed a solitary run in the fifth, sparked by a sacrifice fly from Kaden Campbell, but the rally fizzled as Assumption’s defense held firm.
Assumption head coach Greg Thissen praised his team’s mentality, noting that focus and collective effort were the cornerstones of the victory.
Carlisle senior Bret Schnoor, while acknowledging the loss, reflected positively on his baseball journey, emphasizing growth and gratitude for the experience.
With the win, Assumption advances to the state semifinals, where they will chase a historic final appearance for the first time since 2022.
