NHL Revamps Local Broadcasts After RSN Collapse
The NHL announced that starting next season it will produce and distribute local broadcasts for the Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets, Minnesota Wild and St. Louis Blues, marking a strategic pivot after the abrupt shutdown of regional sports networks that had carried those games.
Production Upgrades and Talent Retention
The collapse of the FanDuel‑owned networks, including Main Street Sports, left a void that the league is filling with a more centralized production model that promises more cameras, richer replays and upgraded graphics while retaining the familiar voices of local announcers.
Steve Mayer, the NHL’s president of events and content, said the league has been preparing for this transition for some time, citing lessons learned from Major League Baseball’s 2023 foray into local telecasts and the NBA’s planned streaming hub for the 2027‑28 season.
To oversee the rollout, the league hired Rob McGlarry as general manager of local media, a move that underscores the importance of dedicated leadership in a rapidly evolving media landscape.
Under the new arrangement, Detroit SportsNet will broadcast the Red Wings, while the Los Angeles Kings will appear on Angels Broadcast TV, a successor to the former FanDuel Sports Network West. The Nashville Predators have reached an agreement with Scripps Sports, and the Anaheim Ducks and Dallas Stars remain possibilities for future inclusion.
The league also plans to keep local announcers who have built long‑standing connections with viewers, ensuring that the fan experience remains anchored in familiar voices even as production values are upgraded.
