Trevick Bertke, a 6‑foot‑8 wing and senior at Lima Shawnee High School in Ohio, has officially committed to the University of Akron’s men’s basketball team, announcing his decision on social media this week.
All‑Ohio Honors
Standing tall on the court, Bertke will enter his final high‑school season as a senior, having already earned third‑team All‑Ohio recognition in Division III last year. His performance helped the Shawnee Warriors capture the Western Buckeye League title.
During the 2025‑26 campaign he posted averages of 18.9 points, 7.4 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.1 steals and 2.4 blocked shots, numbers that placed him among the state’s most versatile big men.
The accolade of co‑Western Buckeye League Player of the Year was shared with his older brother, Beckett Bertke, a first‑team All‑Ohio selection who graduated this spring and will continue his career at the University of Findlay.
Coach John Groce of the Zips praised the addition, noting that Bertke’s shooting range, defensive instincts and rebounding prowess should bolster a program looking to rebound from a challenging recent season. “He brings a rare combination of size and skill,” Groce said in a statement.
The commitment also underscores the growing pipeline of talent from Ohio’s high‑school ranks to Mid‑American Conference schools, a trend that bodes well for the Zips’ recruiting strategy.
