A Community Mourns
A 20‑year‑old baseball player, Aaron Hawkins, died early Saturday in a single‑vehicle crash on a road in St. Johns County, Florida. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene, and investigators are still piecing together the circumstances that led to the collision.
The news quickly spread across social media, where former teammates, classmates and community members shared memories of Hawkins’s infectious smile and the pride he brought to Fleming Island High School. Many posted photos of him in uniform, captioned with messages of condolence and gratitude.
Mike Martino, who coached Hawkins for three years, described the young athlete as “one of the most compassionate teenagers I ever coached.” He noted that Hawkins played with aggression on the diamond but carried a thoughtful demeanor off the field, often seeking out his younger sister Lana after games.
Martino recalled a simple habit that spoke volumes: after every game, Hawkins would head straight to Lana, giving her a hug and a quick chat about the day’s catch. “He always made a beeline for his family,” Martino said, highlighting the close bond the siblings shared.
A Life Remembered
After graduating from Fleming Island High, Hawkins enrolled at Edward Waters University, where he continued to balance academics with his love of fishing — a pastime he developed while spending weekends in Jacksonville. His family says that love of the outdoors will be honored during his memorial.
A memorial service for Hawkins is set for Saturday, August 1, at 3:00 p.m. in the Broadus‑Raines Chapel. In lieu of flowers, friends are encouraged to donate to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Foundation or Walk Off Baseball Charities, causes that reflected his passions.
