The Portland State University women's basketball program continues to make headlines, not only for its play on the court but also for its commitment to academic excellence.
Academic Excellence Recognized
The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) has named the Vikings among its special mentions for the fifth straight season, acknowledging the team’s cumulative GPA of 3.234. This marks the third consecutive year the program has earned a spot on the association’s Academic Top 25, a list that celebrates the 25 highest‑performing teams in the nation.
The Vikings’ academic standing reflects a sustained effort across multiple seasons. In the 2020‑21 campaign the team posted a GPA of 3.672, placing them well within the elite tier of collegiate programs. Since then, the squad has maintained a strong scholarly profile, underscoring the university’s emphasis on balancing athletics and scholarship.
Individual honors have followed the team’s collective success. Three Vikings — Kyleigh Brown, Taylor Moffat and Laynee Torres‑Kahapea — earned spots on the College Sports Information Directors of America (CSIDA) Academic All‑District team, a testament to their performance both in the classroom and on the hardwood. Additionally, seven teammates received Academic All‑Big Sky recognition, including Katelyn Best, Sophie Buzzard, Hannah Chicken and Kirstine Munk.
These academic accolades come alongside competitive ambitions, as the program continues to recruit talent and develop strategies aimed at climbing the Big Sky standings. The dual focus on scholarship and sport exemplifies a growing trend among mid‑major programs that view academic achievement as integral to athletic identity.
