Alex Bowman, the 33‑year‑old driver who has become a familiar face in the NASCAR Cup Series, announced this week that he will step away from full‑time competition after the 2027 season.
Bowman, who currently pilots the No. 48 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports, revealed that he has agreed to a one‑year extension that will keep him behind the wheel of the iconic car through the final stretch of his career.
A career built on perseverance
Since swapping the No. 88 for the No. 48 in 2021, Bowman has turned a challenging transition into a resurgence, capturing a career‑high four victories in that debut year and adding two more wins later, including a triumph at Las Vegas in 2022 and a landmark victory on the Chicago street circuit in 2024, the most recent of his eight Cup Series victories.
The 2026 campaign, however, has been marred by a series of setbacks. Performance struggles have been compounded by health issues, notably vertigo, which have limited his on‑track effectiveness and left him sitting 29th in the points standings with three top‑five and four top‑10 finishes in 17 starts.
Looking ahead to a final flourish
Despite the adversity, Bowman remains focused on ending his racing journey on a high note. He has expressed a clear desire to compete for wins in his final season, hoping to add to his tally before hanging his helmet up for good.
