Rowan County erupted in celebration last night as they clinched the Area 3 baseball championship, edging Union County 4-2 in a game that kept fans on the edge of their seats.
Sixth-Inning Heroics
The decisive blow came from Cole Blevins, who launched a three-run homer in the sixth inning. The rally was set in motion when Brody Pope was hit by a pitch, and Maddox Moore stole second before crossing the plate on a throwaway that positioned Blevins for his game-changing swing.
Dominant Pitching
Parker Durant delivered a masterclass on the mound, limiting Union County to just three hits while the Rowan offense built its lead. Though he flirted with a complete game, Durant was pulled in the seventh, leaving the bullpen to finish the job.
Clutch Save
Luke Ponczka closed out the game with a flyball out to left field, securing the save and sealing the victory for the Wildcats.
With the championship in hand, Rowan will travel to Gastonia this Saturday to face Wilmington Red in the state tournament. The showdown promises another chapter in what has become a storied postseason run.
A Legacy of Excellence
The win marks Rowan’s 23rd Area 3 title, a tally that includes the historic championships captured by Salisbury Legion in 1954 and 1955. It also represents the team’s 16th appearance in the state tournament, underscoring the program’s consistent presence on the big stage.
