Mike Boynton Jr. Steps Into Michigan’s Spotlight After Dusty May Exit

The new head coach aims to keep the Wolverines’ core intact while reshaping the staff for a championship push

When Dusty May accepted a front‑office role with the NBA, the Michigan Wolverines faced a pivotal crossroads. Enter Mike Boynton Jr., who had spent three seasons as May’s top assistant, stepping into the head‑coach seat with a clear vision.

Boynton’s first priority was stability. He convinced 13 of the 14 players to remain, preserving the core that helped the team compete in the Big Ten last season.

A New Era for Michigan Basketball

The coaching staff largely stayed intact, with Akeem Miskdeen and Kyle Church continuing their roles. Boynton also promoted KT Harrell to assistant coach and added Ivy League veteran Mike Martin to the bench.

Despite the continuity, the roster will lose junior guard L.J. Cason, creating a need for a veteran ball‑handler. Boynton has indicated he will pursue another experienced guard to fill the gap.

Two positions on the support staff remain open, including another assistant coach and a director of basketball operations, giving Boynton flexibility to shape his team’s infrastructure.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to lead the Wolverines and compete for championships,” Boynton said, underscoring his ambition to restore Michigan to the top of the conference.
